The Ozil goal meme comes from Mesut Özil’s goal for Arsenal against Ludogorets in the 2016 Champions League group stage. He chips the keeper, then, with the net empty, simply waits while two defenders slide past him before side-footing it in. On TikTok that calm has become a trend, and the newest wave uses AI to make a new video of you doing the same moves.
Key takeaways
- The goal: Mesut Özil, Arsenal vs Ludogorets, 2016 Champions League group stage.
- The move: chip the keeper → take the bounce → let two defenders slide past → side-foot into the empty net.
- The joke is the wait. He could shoot, but he does not.
- The AI version puts you in his place, in the clothes from your photo.
Which Ozil goal is the meme?
It is the goal Mesut Özil scored for Arsenal against Ludogorets in the 2016 Champions League group stage. Fans searching “mesut ozil goal vs ludogorets” or “that Ozil goal” almost always mean this one, because nothing else he scored looks quite like it.
What happens in the Ozil goal, step by step?
Five moments, all in one run:
- The run. Özil breaks clear and the keeper sprints out to meet him.
- The chip. He scoops the ball over the diving keeper.
- The bounce. One calm touch as the first defender slides in and misses.
- The wait. He stops, drags the ball back and lets the second defender slide straight past.
- The finish. A gentle side-foot into the empty net.
Why did the Ozil goal become a TikTok trend?
Because the wait is so unexpected. Most players would smash the ball in the second the keeper is beaten. Özil treats an open goal like a training drill, and that calm reads as pure confidence. It is also easy to recognise in a few seconds: chip, two slides, tap-in. That makes it ideal for short video, where people now caption it with any moment they handled a little too coolly.
How does the Ozil goal AI trend work?
An AI video model follows a reference clip of the move and redraws the scorer from one photo, keeping your face and the clothes you were wearing. So a hoodie, a cardigan or a work shirt ends up under the floodlights. Our Ozil goal AI video generator does this with Seedance by ByteDance; the full walkthrough and the free options are in how to make the Ozil goal AI video for free.
Is it real footage?
The AI version is not. It is a new video in a generic stadium, and the players around you are made up. Post it as a fan video, label it as AI-generated where the app asks, and never present it as a real match goal. YupPop is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Mesut Özil, Arsenal, Ludogorets, UEFA or any broadcaster.
