The Black Cat Clapping meme is an AI-made clip of a black cat with human hands and a far too human grin that gives a slow, smug round of applause. It started as an Instagram comedy video in late September 2026 and spread on TikTok as a green-screen reaction: whenever someone does something dumb, the clapping cat shows up to congratulate them.

- Want your pet to do it? Make a Black Cat Clapping AI video of your pet.
What is the Black Cat Clapping meme?
It is a reaction meme. A black cat sits facing the camera, breaks into a wide, toothy, very human smile and claps a pair of human hands, slowly, like a disappointed teacher. Nothing else happens, and nothing else needs to. It is also called the clapping cat meme, the cat clapping meme or the black cat meme clapping.
Where did the clapping cat come from?
According to Know Your Meme, the clip comes from a comedy video posted on Instagram by @merkurianin on 25 September 2026. In it he gives his cat some food, and an AI-made version of the cat smiles and claps back at him. The video passed two million likes in about a week. On 28 September a TikTok creator posted the cat as a green screen over a caption about a teacher taking their phone, and the format took off from there.
What does it mean?
It is ironic praise. The cat claps for the person who answered a question nobody asked, the friend who shows up two hours late, the teammate who throws the game or the teacher who confiscates a phone. The slower the clap and the creepier the grin, the harder the sarcasm. Some edits add a twist: the cat claps and then disappears, or flies away.
Black Cat Clapping GIF and green screen
- Green screen: the cat on a plain green background, keyed out in an editor so it sits on top of a screenshot or another clip.
- GIF: a two-or-three-second loop of the clap, mostly used in group chats and comment sections.
- Your own version: instead of reposting someone else’s cat, make a clapping clip of your own cat, dog or other pet and trim it into a GIF.
What sound does the trend use?
There is no single song. Most posts use an original sound uploaded with the green screen, and edits often swap in a slowed track. The reliable way to match a version you like is to tap its sound and choose Use this sound when you post.
Why everyone is making AI versions
The original cat was made with AI, so remaking it with AI is the obvious next step. A slow clap from your own cat or dog lands harder than a repost. Upload one photo of your pet to the Black Cat Clapping AI video generator and you get a new clip of it grinning and clapping. YupPop is an independent tool and is not affiliated with the creator of the original video or the social platforms.
